Local nursing home owner sets high standard for care

Tyson Belanger, owner of Shady Oaks Assisted Living on Stevens St., has received national attention for his efforts fighting Covid-19. His efforts have been featured in news coverage since April. This week NPRs Here and Now interviewed Belanger along with one of his staff.

Belanger has chosen to set-up living quarters for his health care staff to self-quarantine with residents, a program that he has named on-site caregiving.

His effort has incurred heavy expenses but also maintained a Covid-free residence.

McKnights, which specializes in long-term health care news, wrote about Belanger, a former Marine whose family started, has owned and has operated the assisted living business for 44 years, on April 29: Self-quarantine with residents? Owner and former Marine says it could work in senior living.

Belanger penned the following opinion piece that appeared in the April 3 Hartford Courant: https://www.courant.com/opinion/op-ed/hc-op-belanger-assisted-living-0331-20200403-c2syb2r2kbawfhrqfdhxkltbiy-story.html.
