By Michael Letendre

After a scoreless first half of action on Tuesday, the Bristol Eastern girls soccer squad was about 10 minutes away from tying a very good Maloney squad.

But at the 70th minute mark of the match, the Spartans notched the only goal of the game.

Maloney’s Mackenzie McCormack took a shot from just inside the 18 yard box that Eastern keeper Grace D’Amato was able to stop.

However, the rebound fell to the feet of Molly Marcuss who drilled the ball in for the game winner as the Spartans defeated the Lancers by a 1-0 final from Falcon Field in Meriden.

It was the first loss in three tries for the Lancers, now 2-4.

“It was a sloppy affair for both teams in some rainy and wet conditions,” said Eastern coach Scott Redman. “Neither team looked sharp but the Spartans were able to capitalize on one of their few chances while the Lancers were [not].”

Maloney outshot Eastern 10-8 while D’Amato had anther good day in the net, tallying five saves.

Maloney’s Cassidy Colacicco made seven stops for the home team – now 3-1-1 overall.

The Lancers are back in action on Friday in a rematch against Lewis Mills from Nassahegan Field at 4:30 p.m. from Burlington while on Tuesday, its Eastern/Central from the turf field at BCHS.

Game time for the challenge against the Rams is 7:15 p.m.
