Girls soccer- Southington defeats BE, 3-1

Southington beat Bristol Eastern in the first CCC postseason experience game, 3-1, at Southington High School on Tuesday.

Southington controlled play for much of the game but after the first half, the score was tied 1-1, with the Lancers hanging on and executing their game plan of defending and keeping the game low scoring.

In the 14th minute, the Blue Knights broke free on a great through ball from Abby Sowa. Shannon Litchfield did the rest, beating the BE goalkeeper and giving Southington a 1-0 lead.

Southington continued to fire shots in the first half but could not find the back of the net.

With less than a minute left in the half, Eastern’s Lili Morneault forced a turnover from the Southington backline and played a beautiful chip over the goalkeeper’s head to even the score at 1-1, which would be the halftime score.

Despite improved energy and competitiveness from the Lancers in the second half, Southington wore down the Lancers.

On their 3rd corner kick in the second half (11 total for the game), with heavy pressure from Allison Carr, the Lancers deflected the ball into their own net for an own goal, giving the Knights a 2-1 lead.

Allison Carr wasted no time padding the lead, as she blasted a rebound back in the corner of the net just 2 minutes after the second score.

BE continued to battle and fight despite constant pressure all day long.

Grace D’Amato had a sensational day in goal, facing 28 shots and making 9 saves on the day.

The Lancers will play their final game of the season Thursday at 4:00 at Farmington.
