St. Paul baseball wins big over Naugatuck, 17-3, to advance to the NVL Championship game Thursday

Senior pitcher Tyler Kiluk picked up his 3rd win of the season as St. Paul defeated Naugatuck 17-3 in the first semi-final game of the NVL Tournament at Municipal Stadium Tuesday evening. Kiluk held the Greyhounds to three runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out five.

Starter Kevin Cestari took the loss for Naugatuck.

After Kiluk retired the Naugatuck hitters in order in the top of the 1st, the St Paul offense got things rolling in the bottom of the frame. Jamie Leggett led off with a single, and promptly stole 2nd. Cole Raymond reached on an infield error that allowed Leggett to advance to 3rd. Raymond stole 2nd to put two men in scoring position, and catcher Cal Chance brought them both home with a two RBI single. Chance was able to score on the second error of the inning that allowed Ryan Kilpatrick to reach safely. Jonathan Remillard singled, and both he and Kilpatrick scored on AJ Corrado’s two RBI single. The Falcons batted around, and led 5-0 after one inning.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, St Paul sent fifteen men to the plate. The first ten batters all reached safely and scored, and St Paul had a 15-0 lead after 3 innings. The inning featured doubles by Chance (one RBI) and Kilpatrick, and singles by Keaton Kroll (two RBIs), Raymond (two RBIs), Devin Kulas (one RBI), Kilpatrick (one RBI), Bryce Adamski (one RBI), and Leggett.

Naugatuck scored three in the top of the 4th to cut the lead to 15-3. Alex Teixeira led off with a single to collect Naugatuck’s first hit off Kiluk. Kevin Cestari also singled, and Aidan Adanosky was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Matt Stefan hit an RBI single to give Naugatuck its first run of the game. But as things turned out, that was Naugutuck’s last hit of the game. Two more runs scored on an infield error before the final out of the inning was recorded.

In the 6th, St Paul added 2 more insurance runs on a single by Kroll, an RBI single by Raymond, and an RBI double by Kulas. Dom Napoletano relieved Kulik in the top of the 7th, and recorded the final 3 outs to preserve the 17-3 win.

The Falcons improve to 19-3 on the year and advance to play Woodland in ther Championship game at Municipal Stadium on Thursday.

Ryan Kilpatrick was 2 for 4 with a double, 1 RBI, and 3 runs scored.

Devin Kulas was 2 for 5 with a double, 2 RBIs, and 1 run scored.

Keaton Kroll was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Jonathan Remillard was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.

Cal Chance was 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Jamie Leggett was 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored.
