Good morning, Bristol!

Flags on Memorial Boulevard. | Laura Bailey Photo

All right, we know you have the day off, but get your butt out of that bed! There is a lot to do today.

Weather

The high temperature will be around 76 degrees between 2 and 3 p.m. Winds 3 to 11 m.p.h., with gusts to 24 m.p.h. Gusts typically last for fewer than 20 seconds.

To do list

There is the Memorial Day Procession this morning, beginning on Hope Street and ending at the entrance to the Veterans Memorial Boulevard bridge. The procession starts at 10 a.m.

The Memorial Day Bridge Dedication immediately follows the procession at 10:30 a.m. on the Veterans Memorial Boulevard bridge.

If you can, take a slow walk on the Boulevard today and visit each monument to our war dead.

Also, at some point today, you should get those tomato plants in the ground, don’t you think?

Monday movies

On Turner Classic Movies, there is a military movie marathon of classic war movies. Try to catch one.

  • 8:45 a.m.- Where Eagles Dare
  • 11:30 a.m.- None but the Brave
  • 1:30 p.m.- The Dirty Dozen
  • 4:15 p.m.- Kelly’s Heroes
  • 6:45 p.m.- Appointment in Tokyo
  • 8:00 p.m.- King Rat
  • 10:30 p.m.- Objective, Burma!

This day in history, May 29

In 1765, Patrick Henry gives his historic speech against the Stamp Act, answering a cry of Treason! with, “If this be treason, make the most of it!”

In 1886, American pharmacist John Pemberton begins to advertise his patent medicine — Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Ga. (Dentists from all over America write him thank you notes.)

In 1917, John F. Kennedy was born.

1919, Charles Strite filed a patent for the automatic pop-up toaster. (And our staff still can’t figure out how not to burn our bagel.)

Lee Greenwood said it perfectly

“And I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free. And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.”

Have a thoughtful, peaceful Memorial Day.

All TBE readers, supporters and donors

The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.

  • Non-members will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.

Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
