Bristol Eastern wrestling hangs in against Glastonbury on Wednesday, falling by 10 points in its season opener

By Michael Letendre

BRISTOL – The Bristol Eastern wrestling program always battles the top squads every season when it comes to Central Connecticut Conference competition.

Second year coach Todd Krolikowski had his guys ready for its opening meet on Wednesday night against Glastonbury in a CCC interdivisional tilt from Bristol.

The Lancers battled but ended up falling by a 40-30 final from the Thomas M. Monahan Gymnasium on the campus of Bristol Eastern.

It was the first match of the season for both programs.

At 106 pounds, Eastern’s Yussuf Bah did not have a competitor to face, earning six points via forfeit.

The Kingstreeters also earned six points at 113 pounds when Liam Corbin did not have any opposition to square off against.

The bout at 138 pounds saw the Lancers’ Gabriel White flip Glastonbury’s Carmelo Rafaela by a 13-7 decision and then the 144 pound showdown was won by the Lancers’ Soph Um – a 13-6 decision winner over Alec Schlichting.

Eastern’s Owen Broyles (175) nabbed a pinfall victory against Glastonbury’s Connor Downing in just under ninety seconds (1:27).

And in the heavyweight bout, Eastern’s Nuon Sovannara took it to A’marii Dudley, earning the pin in 1:43.

Eastern also had Andrew Brown (120 pounds), Juan Florentino (126), Luke Viens (132), Adoni Fernandez (150), Rocco Barbino (157), Gianluca Morello (165), Weston Williams (190) and Rio Fernandez (215) in action on Wednesday.

What’s on tap?

Two meets are on the docket for Eastern before the holiday recess.

The Lancers are in action this Saturday at the annual CJ McCormack Invite from Berlin High School.

The meet is scheduled for 9 a.m. (not 9 p.m. like the CIAC website claims).

And then next Wednesday, the Kingstreeters get to work against CCC South competition.

Up first is a stern challenge from the program at Platt of Meriden.

Meet time is 6 p.m. from the Thomas M. Monahan Gymnasium.
