NEW BRITAIN – Scholastic cross country in the Central Connecticut Conference only held one postseason race this year and a couple of runners from the outstanding boys program at Bristol Central gave it their best shot.
And it was a fantastic showing by Nate DeAngelo and Frankie Porrini III as the duo finished in the top five at the CCC Region B Championships from Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain on Tuesday.
It was an unusually warm November day for the boys 5K race, but DeAngelo overcame the heat and defeated all the competition – winning the race in 15:42 as the senior’s finish was nearly 25 seconds better than the runner up, Jack Martin from Avon (16:06).
Porrini, as usual, kept up with the top runners that day and ended up in fourth place, clocking in a time of 16:28. He was the top finishing sophomore in New Britain.
As a team, Avon won the race, placing all of its athletes in the top 12, and scored 36 points to take the championship.
Southington (53) earned second place while the Rams finished third overall (100).
Bristol Eastern (111) also ran well as a team, placing fourth in the Region B championship event.
After DeAngelo and Porrini crossed the finish the line, the Lancers had several runners complete the course.
Logan Crowley placed 17th in 17:49, Dom Tartarelli (18th, 17:53) was right behind while teammate Carter Harris (18:08) placed 21st overall.
Gabe Bartolome (26th, 18:38) was just thirty seconds off the Harris finish while Central’s Ramon Peters (28th, 18:42) was in the mix as well.
Eastern’s Aidan Tartarelli (29th, 18:42) and Central’s Austin Freve (34th, 19:10) and Reggie Gonzales (35th, 19:13) all finished in the top-35 of the Region B showcase.
The times by Crowley, Dominic Tartarelli, and Aiden Tartarelli were personal bests for the Lancers’ crew.
Eastern’s Dante Marciano (36th, 19:34) also ran well at the event.
In the second varsity race for the boys, Tyler Martin of Eastern took sixth place in 20:27 while Central’s Lance Archibald (20:35) finished in ninth.
