Bristol is hit hard by remnants of Storm Ida

Driving rain from Storm Ida continued from Wednesday afternoon until early Thursday morning, and Bristol’s streams and rivers overflowed in multiple places, causing road blockages, choke points, and commuter frustration this Thursday.

Bristol received five to six inches of rain during the storm. The following photos will give a good picture of the storm’s effects.

The Copper Mine Brook overflowed, as did the watershed property owned by New Britain, and as a result both Mix St. and Maltby St. we’re closed to through traffic. The fields at Edgewood Little League were transformed from fields to a lake. Cars that drove down Mix Street were forced to do a U-turn at the intersection of Mix and Maltby, with many unhappy campers in the vehicles.

Farmington Avenue was closed from the Applewood Restaurant to Brook Street. The water extended from Harbor Freight to Dunkin Donuts on one side of the avenue, and inundated Rodd’s Restaurant Plaza on the other side. Drivers had to plot a serpentine course to navigate from one side of Bristol to the other.

In Forestville, Broad Street was closed as the Pequabuck River overflowed near Crowley Kia. Forestville center escaped severe flooding. However, rail traffic was delayed. Due to some flooding on South Main Street near the Forestville Post Office, the Pan Am Railways cars sat in Forestville center.

Pequabuck River at Rockwell Park

The Pequabuck River at Rockwell Park was roaring where the recent improvements were made. The new wall held up well. As the video shows, the Pequabuck sounded more like the Colorado River.
