Juneteenth closings announced by city; chamber gets new chair and new directors

Juneteenth Holiday closings announced

City Hall and the Bristol Transfer Station will be closed Monday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. 

There will be no curbside collections (rubbish, recycle, yard waste) on Monday, June 19. All curbside collections will be delayed by one day, with Friday collections being completed on Saturday, June 24. 

The Bristol Transfer Station will be open and operating under regular hours on Saturday, June 17 and Saturday, June 24, from 7:30 a.m. to 1p.m. 

Republican state legislators to hold session update at Public Library

The Republican elected officials representing Bristol at the capitol will hold a public legislative update on the recently completed session Wednesday, June 14, at the Bristol Public Library from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

On hand will be Republican State Sen. Henri Martin and Reps. Cara Pavalock-D’Amato and Joe Hoxha. The event is open to the public.

Chambers of Commerce elects new board chair and announces new directors

Christine Malay, director of sales and catering at the DoubleTree by Hilton, was elected board chair of the Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce at its annual meeting on June 7, it was announced earlier this week by the chamber.

She is joined on the officer slate by vice chair Michael Sweeney, Torrington Savings Bank, and secretary Charlie McCormick, Thomaston Savings Bank. Malay assumes the chair from Paul S. Lavoie, who will still serve on the board of directors as its immediate past chair.

At the same meeting, the chamber welcomed 10 new directors: Ryan Allaire, Tracy | Driscoll; Brian Burke, Bristol Public Schools; Eddie Cunningham, M&T Bank; Gina D’Amico, Tilcon; Mary Etter, Bristol Adult Resource Center; Eric Liegeot, AMP Radio Network; Lori Nohilly-Bullock, Hartford HealthCare; John Seagrave, Barron Financial Group; Kaitlyn Stankus; Bristol Health; and Carolyn Verikas; Dusty Dude Woodworks.

Board membership totals 28.

The Chamber announced several internal changes. Current director of marketing, Johnny Burnham, has been promoted to vice president, effective July 1. He will oversee the chamber’s operations and marketing efforts.

Prior to joining the chamber in October of 2022, Burnham led the marketing and public relations team at Bristol Health, served as the marketing & community development director at the Northwestern Connecticut YMCA, operated his own media company, and was an award-winning journalist providing news and sports coverage throughout the Central Connecticut region.

Adalia Malick will join the chamber staff as its business development specialist beginning June 20. Malick will work on membership retention, member engagement and event attendance. A Springfield College grad, Malick knows Central Connecticut well as she is a native of Bristol and a graduate of Bristol Central High School.

City Hall summer hours set

For the summer, most City Hall Offices will close at 2 p.m. on Fridays. The Building Department, the Comptroller’s Office, and the Public Works Department, however, will close at 1:30 p.m. on Fridays.

The changes will be in effect until Friday, Sept. 1.

Exchange Club program ‘Honoring Heroes’ planned in June

The Greater Bristol Exchange Club will be honoring the late police officers Lt. Dustin DeMonte and Sgt. Alex Hamzy, along with Officer Alec Iurato as this year’s “Police Officers of the Year” at its “Honoring Heroes” program at the Aqua Turf Grand Ball Room on June 29.

DeMonte and Hamzy were struck down in the line of duty in an Oct. 12 shooting. Iurato, who was injured in the same incident, is credited for stopping the shooter.

Proceeds from the event will go to the “Fund the First,” a fund which was set up in honor of our deceased officers, and to assist their families.

Wheeler 38th annual golf tournament fundraiser set for Sept. 13

Wheeler’s 38th Annual Golf Classic, presented by Mutual of America Financial Group for the fifth consecutive year, will take place at The Country Club of Farmington on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Registration is open, and sponsors, players, and prize donors are welcome. 

Proceeds from this event will support our planned community health center and flagship location in Bristol, which will provide convenient, whole-health services for the whole family in one convenient location.

In 2022, the Golf Classic event grossed a record-breaking $100,000 to support individuals and families in care through Wheeler’s Basic Needs Fund, bringing the total amount raised since its inception to more than $1.3 million.
