City announces curbside collection of storm debris

The city will begin curbside pick-up of brush/wood debris associated with tropical Storm Isaias on Monday, Aug. 17, according to a release from the mayor’s office.

In the release, Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu requested patience, as the pick-up will continue along with regular city services.

The following procedures from the Department of Public Works will apply:

  • Only brush/wood debris associated with tropical Storm Isaias will be collected. Brush/wood debris that does not have indications of recent saw cut/broken limbs marks or leaves will not be collected.
  • All brush shall be cut in 4-ft. lengths and stacked along the roadway.  Please do not stack debris on roadway pavement and materials stockpiled greater than 10 ft. from the roadway edge will not be collected.
  • Properties containing large stockpiles of brush/wood debris may be temporarily bypassed for collection in order to maximize the number of properties receiving city collection services. The department will then return and collect debris from all referenced properties.
  • Properties containing large logs/tree trunks may also be temporary bypassed, however collection will be scheduled at a later date.
  • The city will collect brush/wood debris on each street one time only. Once the debris is collected on a street, the Department of Public Works will not return/ perform a second collection, except for those properties referenced above, that were temporarily bypassed for having a large amount of debris.
  • The department will maintain a record of streets from which debris has been collected. The list of streets will be posted on the city’s website: www.bristolct.gov. As indicated above once collection is performed on a street a second collection will not be performed.

The city’s Transfer Station, located on Lake Ave., has extended its hours to 7:15 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday to Friday. The disposal of brush/wood debris is free and does not require a Transfer Station permit.
