National Prevention Week statewide event at Connecticut Science Center

Connecticut’s National Prevention Week (NPW) celebration will culminate in a special statewide event at the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford happening jointly with the Center’s “Make it Grow” program.

The NPW event will be held Saturday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Among the prevention professional and state and local leaders scheduled to be in attendance are Chris McClure, chief of staff for Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services; Ken Mysogland, bureau chief of external affairs for the Connecticut Department of Children and Families; and Jody Terranova, deputy commissioner for Connecticut Department of Public Health.

National Prevention Week is an annual health observance, this year from May 7 – 13, dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, mental health and/or substance use disorders.

The primary goals of NPW are threefold:

  • to involve communities in raising awareness of substance use and mental health issues and in implementing prevention strategies, as well as showcasing effectiveness of evidence-based prevention programs;
  • to foster partnerships and collaborations with federal agencies and national organizations dedicated to improving public health; and
  • to promote and disseminate quality substance use prevention and mental health promotion resources and publications.

Connecticut’s program is a collaborative effort led by Wheeler’s Connecticut Clearinghouse and include the following:

  • Connecticut Clearinghouse,
  • the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS),
  • the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF),
  • the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH),
  • The Governor’s Prevention Partnership (GPP), the Prevention Training and Technical Assistance Service Center (TTASC),
  • Regional Behavioral Health Action Organizations (RBHAOs), and
  • Local Prevention Councils and other coalitions serving Connecticut communities.

All TBE readers, supporters and donors

The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.

  • Non-members will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.

Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
