A Snapshot in Time, Bristol June 1920

By Rit Carter

The Bristol Edition takes a look back 100 years to June of 1920 with a snapshot of the following Bristol stories that were making news:

SOLD!

The Palace Theatre located on North Main St. was purchased for $65,000 by Arthur J. Clement and L.M. Willson, both of Harford.

Today’s Your Birthday!

On June 3, Bristol’s oldest resident, Wilfred H. Nettleton celebrated his 95th birthday at his home located on the corner of Maple and Federal streets.

At the age of 13 in 1838 when Martin Van Buren was president, Mr. Nettleton’s father moved the family via carriage from Waterbury to Bristol, when the town had 1,600 inhabitants and was considered a village.

Wilfred Nettleton was one of the original directors of the Bristol National Bank and was on the ground floor of the Republican Party upon its forming.

Walkout

Friday June 4, 75 bench moulders at Sessions Foundry Company walked off the job at 10 a.m.

The workers demanded a 20 percent raise and the foreman be fired. The company refused their demands and, in response, closed that part of the factory.

I’m shocked, shocked to find that booze is being sold here!

With prohibition in effect and suspecting alcohol was being sold in Bristol, specifically moonshine, federal agents on June 10 served a warrant on Samuel Barbaro, proprietor of a small store on Benham St.

The warrant was served following a three-month investigation into Mr. Barbaro and other establishments in the area.

Huh?

Come June11 Louis Rovson, charged with neglecting to properly care for his automobile, is to be tried in police court.

Let’s Play Two!

On June 21, the New Departure baseball team defeated Graton & Knight Manufacturing 3-1 at Muzzy Field. ND plated 1 in the first and 2 in the 4th while their pitching scattered 5 hits over 9 innings. The highly regarded team from Worcester committed 3 errors in the field. Whoops!
