St. Paul baseball opens the season with two wins

St. Paul picked up right where they left off last year with two easy wins to begin the 2023 season.

St. Paul 14, Naugatuck 4

The Falcons, last year’s Class S State Champion, opened the 2023 season with a 14-4 victory over Naugatuck in Naugatuck on Monday. Sophomore pitcher Logan Rembish picked up his first varsity win going the first 4 innings allowing 4 runs on 6 hits while striking out 4. Senior Jamie Leggett picked up the save shutting out Naugatuck over the final 3 innings.

Starter Blake Stone took the loss for Naugatuck.

Rembish scored the first run of the game in the top of the first. After being hit by a pitch, Rembish stole second to move into scoring position. He advanced to 3rd on Devin Kulas’ infield hit, and scored on catcher Cal Chance’s RBI single.

Jonathan Remillard and AJ Corrado started the top of the 2nd with back-to-back singles. Remillard later scored on a passed ball, and Corrado scored on a fielder’s choice ground out by Kyle Wilson. Wilson scored on an RBI double by Jamie Leggett, and Leggett scored on an RBI single by Kulas to make it 5-0.

Naugatuck scored its first run in the bottom of the 2nd inning to make the score 5-1.

In the top of the 4th with one out, Leggett drew a walk. Kulas followed with his 3rd hit of the game putting men on 1st and 2nd. Chance hit into a fielder’s choice making it 1st and 3rd with two out. Ryan Kilpatrick followed with an RBI single, and that chased Blake Stone from the mound. Remillard then greeted reliever Damon Abate with a 2 RBI single, and St Paul led 8-1.

In the bottom of the frame, Naugatuck used 5 consecutive hits – singles by Michael Deitelbaum, Texeira, Cestari, and Barry (1 RBI) followed by a 2 RBI double by Jake Sanchez – to cut St Paul’s lead to 8-4.

Over the final 3 innings, St Paul used key hits by Kulas, Leggett, Kilpatrick, and Remillard to extend the St Paul lead by six more runs while Leggett held the Naugatuck offense in check, allowing only 1 baserunner over that span. The final score was 14-4.

Devin Kulas was 5 for 5 with 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. Jonathan Remillard was 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. Jamie Leggett was 2 for 4 with a double, 1 RBI, and 3 runs scored. Ryan Kilpatrick was 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. And AJ Corrado was 2 for 5 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored

St. Paul 13, Watertown 3

Junior Kyle Wilson picked up his first Varsity win leading St Paul to a 13-3 win over Watertown in Bristol Tuesday afternoon.
Wilson allowed 3 runs on 7 hits while striking out 6 and walking 1. Starter Nick Bristol took the loss for Watertown.

St Paul scored 3 in the bottom of the 1st to take the early lead. Logan Rembish took a lead off walk and stole 2nd to get into scoring position. Devin Kulas singled driving Rembish home and made it 1-0. Cal Chance singled to put 2 men on, and Jonathan Remillard hit a clutch 2 out single to drive in both Kulas and Chance. 

In the 2nd inning St Paul took advantage of a hit batter, 2 walks, 3 errors, and hits by Jamie Leggett, Ryan Kilpatrick, AJ Corrado, and Kyle Wilson to score 7 and make it 10-0. Three more walks and another hit batter made it 11-0 after 3 innings. 

Watertown rallied to score 3 on 6 hits (singles by Tino Tanganelli, Cal Payne, Vin Tanganelli, Al Gandino, Jack McCloskey, and Boden Stanton) in the top of the 4th, and cut St Paul’s lead to 11-3.

It was a very good day for St Paul freshman Dom Napoletano. Making his first Varsity pitching appearance, he came in in relief of Wilson to pitch the top of the 5th. After walking the first batter, he settled down and retired the next 3 Watertown hitters in order striking out 2 of them. Then in the bottom of the frame, Napoletano’s first Varsity at bat came with the bases loaded and the score 12-3. Dom stroked an RBI single, and that gave St Paul the walk off win.
