Woodland Regional girls shock St. Paul with huge 4th quarter comeback, 2 OT marathon, 63-56 victory

Basketball

Going into the 4th quarter of their Friday afternoon contest at Woodland Regional, the Saint Paul girls appeared to be cruising to another easy triumph. The Falcons held Woodland to 4 points in the 3rd quarter, and held a seemingly solid 14 point lead going into the final stanza.

But that 14 point advantage disappeared, as a furious defensive effort by Woodland held the Falcons to 6, and the Hawks from Beacon Falls knocked down 20 of their own, and suddenly an expected Falcon victory was going into overtime.

In the first OT, each team scored 9, so a second overtime was in store. Woodland finally sealed up a home victory by putting up a 10-4 advantage in the second overtime, and came away with a 63-56 verdict that surely will qualify as a highlight to their season.

St. Paul was led offensively by the trio of Audrey Tice, Nadia Reimer, and Alexis Tierpack with 13, 11, and 10 points respectively.

Woodland’s Casey Mulligan scored 20, and Ireland Stariski added 16 to pace Woodland.

After playing four games in seven days, the Falcons finally get some rest before facing Holy Cross in Waterbury on Tuesday, Feb 1.
