Something new for Bristol–A Victorian picnic on Federal Hill Green featuring Steampunk culture

Created with GIMP

An inaugural event, “A Victorian Summer Fantasy in the Park” will be held Saturday, Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Federal Hill Green. The event features Steampunk culture and is sponsored by Oddball Newt Productions & Silk City Steampunk. An afterparty at Firefly Hollow Brewing follows, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The feature will include a B.Y.O Potluck PIcnic, Ragtime piano music and iced tea at the gazebo, a tea dueling tournament administered by alumni champions, museum interpreters and storytellers under the shade trees with history about Bristol and the city’s key role in the Age of Steam, a glimpse of the WHISTCO Wonder in full operation, Steampunk crafters Swap Shop, and overview of future events at Bristol’s museums.

A subgenre of science fiction or fantasy, Steampunk has created a subculture all its own, focusing on technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Steampunk has festivals, conventions, art projects, fashion and music. Characteristics include gears, goggles, gauges, top hats, and corsets (always worn on the outside).

Participation is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and folding chairs for this Victorian-style picnic.

The event is organized and hosted by James Worthington, and the all-volunteer staff of Silk City Steampunk, along with Oddball Newt Productions and David Carlson.
