Bristol Eastern girls tennis had a tough start to the month of May

By Michael Letendre

It was a tough ending for the Bristol Eastern girls tennis team last week.

But the program refuses to yield as the locals continue to compete against some of the top squads the Central Connecticut Conference has to offer.

On Thursday, May 6, Eastern fell to Wethersfield by a 7-0 final and the following day, it was the same score from home against Newington.

The Lancers fell to 2-7 off the two losses.

In the top singles slot, Shelly Pettengill defeated Eastern’s Ashlee Lewandoski by identical 6-1 scores but the Lancers’ Brooke Treannie hung tough in the No. 2 spot.

Anna Griffin ended up battling Treannie to a 6-4 first set score but the Kingstreeter dropped the second, 6-1.

Lili Garcia (No. 3 singles) shutout Ava Gesner 6-0 and 6-0 and in the final singles showdown, Wethersfield’s Sabrina Schuster won over Adrianna Reay, 6-0 and 6-1.

In top doubles’ play, the Eagles tandem of Bella Bonvisuto and Andrea Moyano turned away Jenna Cefaly and Brianna Kelley by 6-2 and 6-1 scores.

And then, the No. 2 double’s combination of Liv Thompson and Morgan Cathcart defeated Kiana Ouellette and Olivia Dossias (6-1 and 6-0) and in the final spot, Wethersfield’s Lindsey Aglieco and Abby Alger shutout Eastern’s Gina D’Angelo and Taylor Berube over consecutive sets.

And the next afternoon, in a CCC interdivisional challenge in Bristol, Eastern fell to Newington, 7-0.

Newington’s top single’s player, Anusha Singh, beat Lewandoski by identical 6-0 scores while Emilia Dugas (No. 2 singles) defeated Treannie over set scores of 6-2 and 6-0.

Michelle Novikova (No. 3 singles) turned back Gesner (6-0, 6-1) and in the final singles position, Newington’s Rachel Errickson dropped Kiana Ouellette over straight sets (6-0, 6-0).

But Newington’s top doubles combination of Emily Rogalski and Veronica Torres were pushed to the brink by Cefaly and Kelley.

Off a third set challenge, the Lancers’ duo fell 10-6.

Newington’s Rebecca Fisher and Dian Sliwinski defeated Reay and Dossias (6-1, 6-0) in No. 2 doubles action and in the final dual contest,

Emily Gaudet and Meghana Gadde defeated D’Angelo and Samantha over 6-0 and 6-0 scores.
