St. Paul girls defeat their regular season nemesis, Torrington, to advance to finals of NVL Tournament on Wednesday.

Basketball

The two times St. Paul faced Torrington during the regular season, the Red Raiders walked away with the victory. But for the Falcons Monday night, the third try was the charm, and the result was a 47-44 victory and a chance to face top-seeded Holy Cross of Waterbury in the NVL Championship game Wednesday night at Kennedy High in Waterbury.

Torrington came into the game as the number two seed in the tournament and St. Paul was seeded third. But the Falcons jumped ahead thanks in large part to the outside shooting of Audrey Tice and Olivia Dahn, who combined for seven three-pointers on the night.

St. Paul led by ten at the end of three periods, 41-31, but they had to withstand a determined Torrington comeback in the final minutes to claim the victory. The Falcons were ultimately able to hang on for a three point win, and now Holy Cross awaits.

Tice and Dahn shared high-scoring honors for the Falcons with 13 points apiece.

Hayley Burger led Torrington with 20.

The Falcons now have a 17-5 record. The championship game Wednesday is scheduled for 7:00.

St. Paul was the only team to defeat Holy Cross in the NVL regular season, and the Cross’s 20-2 record is certainly daunting. But St. Paul knows the formula, and they know that if they execute they can leave with a championship trophy Wednesday night.
