St. Paul wins pitcher’s duel over Wolcott in the opener of the NVL playoffs by a 1-0 score

Baseball

Jamie Leggett led St. Paul to a 1-0 win over Wolcott in a classic pitcher’s duel in Bristol Monday afternoon. Leggett allowed only two singles over 6 and 1/3 innings while striking out ten.

A.J. Martinez also pitched a brilliant game for Wolcott, allowing only one run (unearned) on threehits while striking out five.

For the game, St. Paul had only four baserunners while Wolcott had six.

The sole run was scored in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Kyle Wilson beat out an infield single on a play that was very close at first. Keaton Kroll re-entered the game replacing Wilson on 1st, and advanced to 2nd on a passed ball. One out later, Leggett drove a single to left scoring Kroll, and St Paul took a 1-0 lead into the 7th.

In the top of the 7th, Leggett retired the 1st batter on a come backer on one pitch. Then Wolcott’s James Larkin worked a walk on a nine pitch at bat, and Leggett’s day on the mound was over.

Cole Raymond struck out the next two batters to pick up his first save on the season and preserve the 1-0 victory.

The Falcons have now moved on to host Naugatuck Tuesday afternoon.
