Inaugural DK Movement Cares 5K this Saturday

Local author Melissa Ramos will be signing copies of her new children’s book, “I Am Lincoln,” this Saturday as part of the inaugural DK Movement Cares 5K event, a fundraiser for two Bristol charities, Agape House Homeless Shelter Outreach and the Bristol Special Olympics.

The 5K event will be held at the Bridge Community Church on School Street at 8 a.m. A free Kids Fun Run for children 8 and under will be held before the 5K.

A limited number of free copies of Ramos book, will be available, along with the opportunity to meet Ramos’ son, Lincoln, who inspired the book. Lincoln is a nonverbal special needs child. Ramos said she writes to give him a voice.

The first 300 participants who sign up for the race will receive a complimentary t-shirt and swag bag. Top finishers in the 5K Run will receive cash prizes; discounted rates are available for teams that sign-up to participate, and there will be school vs. school, team vs. team and gym vs. gym friendly competitions.

Online registration has been underway since the beginning of August at www.dkmovementcares.org. In addition to online reservation now available, day of race registration will be available by check and cash only.

Media sponsor for the event is WFSB Channel 3. The nonprofit DK Movement Cares founders Derek Jones and Kelly Houston were interviewed on the morning edition of WFSB’s Great Day earlier this month.

Among the businesses and organizations sponsoring the event are LatinoFestUSA.com, Barnes Group, Michael Chambers Jr., Walmart, Central CT Chamber of Commerce, and AMP Radio Network. Additional sponsorship packages are available; see www.dkmovementcares.org for details.

Event vendors will include Crowley Nissan, Vitality Human Performance Gym and Bristol Eliminating Substance Use Together (BEST).

The nonprofit DK Movement Cares was formed earlier this year by Houston and Jones, co-founders of the DK Movement streetwear brand, based in Bristol. The business was recognized for its community outreach by the Better Business Community in 2022.

All TBE readers, supporters and donors

The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.

  • Non-members will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.

Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
