Howard J. Friday, Jr., 90

Howard J. Friday, Jr., 90, of Bristol, widower of Concetta (Malvetz) “Chickie” Friday, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 25, at his home.  Howard was born in Torrington on Nov. 22, 1931, and was a son of the late Howard J. Friday, Sr., and Anita (Bolcher) Friday. He was raised in Torrington graduating from Torrington High School. He enlisted to serve in the United States Navy in 1951 serving aboard the USS Muliphen (AKA-61). After his Navy service, he went to work for W.T. Grant Department Store where he would go on to meet his future wife “Chickie.” They would get married in 1958 and be together for 55 years.

Howard was an avid golfer who began caddying at the Torrington Country Club at the age of 10. He became a very good golfer who had three career holes-in-one. He was a 40-year member of the Pequabuck Golf Club where he had many great times. He also enjoyed worshipping the sun whether on the beach or in his yard. He spent many days in his chair just watching the people go by. He was a huge Brooklyn Dodger fan until their departure from New York and after a few years he eventually began rooting for the rival Yankees. He was also a big New York Giants fan which occupied his Sunday afternoons.

Howard is survived by four children: Susan D’Amato and husband, Jim of Southington, Janis LaFrance and husband, Jim of Farmington, Donna Friday and Brian Suchinski of Bristol, and Howie Friday and wife, Kate of Berlin; two brothers: Keith Friday of Torrington and Donald Friday of Lake George, N.Y.; a sister: Alice Canfield of Torrington; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren plus one due in October; sister-in-law: Judith Ciccio and husband, Jim; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Church, 111 School St., Bristol. Burial, with military honors, will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. Relatives and friends may call at Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, prior to the Mass on Tuesday between 10 and 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bristol Hospital Home Care and Hospice, PO Box 977, Bristol, CT 06011-0977.
