St. Paul baseball defeats Derby in 5 innings, 14-0; qualifies for Class S tournament

Pitchers Kyle Wilson, Dom Napoletano, and Logan Rembish tossed a combined one hitter as St. Paul defeated Derby 14-0 in Bristol Friday afternoon. Wilson picked up his third win of the season and Nikolas Kotucek took the loss.

St. Paul scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, catcher Cal Chance walked. Chance stole second, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on Coby Dagata’s ground out to give St. Paul the early 1-0 lead. 

In the bottom of the second, Keaton Kroll led off with a walk. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then third on a ground out. Kotucek struck out the next batter for the second out and was almost out of the inning.

But the next six St. Paul batters reached safely, and all scored to make it 8-0. The key hit of the inning was Dagata’s first home run of the season; a three-run blast over the right field fence. The inning also featured hits by AJ Corrado, Logan Rembish, and an RBI single by Jay DeRosa.

St. Paul tacked on six more runs in the bottom of the third on singles by DeRosa and Seth Meurer, RBI singles by Dagata and Brian Anderson, and an RBI double by Rembish.

With this win, St. Paul qualifies for the Class S State Championship Tournament.
